Inclusive Green Finance Working Group (IGFWG) Webinar: Strengthening Resilience & Innovative Solutions for Rural Population

AFI is organizing the fourth Inclusive Green Finance Working Group (IGFWG) Webinar on 22 April 2020 at 2.00 PM UTC. The webinar is organized for IGF WG members only.

The increasing intensity of climate change is altering the rainfall patterns, reducing groundwater reserves and producing frequent droughts and floods. The intense rains, combined with agricultural processes, deforestation and overgrazing, exacerbate soil erosion, resulting in less fertile land. Thus, climatic phenomena combined with processes of environmental degradation weaken essential ecosystems services for agricultural activities, undermining the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The Microfinance for Adaptation based on Ecosystems (MEbA) project aims to provide access to products and microfinance services to rural and peri-urban populations in Latin America region to access to investments for improving productive practices, increasing income and improving ecosystem reserves. MEbA project focuses mainly to address two aspects, the first one is to guarantee that ecosystem services are at least, preserved or strengthened as people subsistence depend on it; and second, provide options for improving their socioeconomic conditions in general.

Alternatively, regulators and policymakers – domestic and international – are increasingly working with industry participants from a wide variety of backgrounds to develop appropriate FinTech policy and regulatory approaches. This endeavours to balance opportunities and risks, where possible building systems and financial infrastructures that not only perform better from the standpoint of market participants but also from the standpoint of major regulatory and policy objectives. Enhancing public-private dialogue (PPD) between regulators and industry participants can strengthen their mutual understanding of FinTech innovation and risk profiles, the role of technological innovation in financial inclusion, and contribute towards defining global standards in areas such as cybersecurity and data privacy.

To discuss this issue, the fourth IGFWG webinar on “Strengthening Resilience & Innovative Solutions for Rural Population” will feature Jacinto Buenfil (Microfinance for Adaptation based on Ecosystems (MEbA) and winner of AFI’s first FinTech showcase, OKO founder and CEO Simon Schwall.
