Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman is set to receive the Banker’s Best Central Bank Governor of the Year 2015 for the Asia and the Pacific region, partly for his work in promoting financial inclusion.
Governor Rahman’s work exemplifies how central banks can play essential roles in providing capital for environmentally and socially aware development without compromising on growth or macroeconomic stability, according to the Banker. Governor Rahman said he believes supporting agriculture and small and medium-sized enterprises could avert financial crises.
Also, on Tuesday, Governor Rahman visited Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando Tetangco. Both openly discussed their experiences as important members of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI). They acknowledged the success of BB as a member of the AFI Steering Committee. Governor Rahman also shared various financial inclusion success stories from Bangladesh, such as survey report on extended coverage of the mobile banking by 76 percent of the rickshaw-pullers in Dhaka which extends financial services to the poor one step above.
