The Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) has held a national series of roadshows to introduce citizens to the country’s new Fast Payments system, which forms part of the Eswatini Payments Switch (EPS).
The EPS, which is fully financed and operated by CBE, facilitates systems interconnectedness and interoperability among payment service providers. It is being rolled out in three phases, starting with the Fast Payments system, which allows consumers to transfer money and make payments quickly and easily, and access real-time updates or statements, at any time of day.
In his speech at the launch of the EPS in December 2024, Dr Phil Mnisi, Governor of the Central Bank of Eswatini, said “Fast Payments will be revolutionary for payments processing in the country, as it ushers in real time payments across all payment service providers, both banks and non-banks. As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize its significance to Eswatini’s digital financial services sector. This achievement contributes to both infrastructure development and financial inclusion in the economy.”
In coming months, Open Banking, and Point of Sale and ATM Switching features of the Payment Switch will come online.
