AFI welcomes Mexico’s La Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) as its 89th member. As the core component of its mission, SHCP oversees the federal government’s economic goals and fiscal policies, in order to promote fair, inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
As the country’s finance ministry, SHCP is a leading institution in the promotion of financial inclusion within Mexico, serving as President of Mexico’s National Council on Financial Inclusion, launched at the 2011 Global Policy Forum (GPF) in Riviera Maya. In addition, SHCP has played a critical role in bringing financial inclusion to the forefront of the global agenda by designating it as one of the key areas of focus for Mexico’s Presidency of the G20. To that end, and under SHCP’s leadership, the G20 Financial Inclusion Peer Learning Program was launched at the June 2012 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. Under the program, which AFI will support as a key implementing partner, G20 and non-G20 countries have committed to raise financial inclusion to the highest level in their national agendas as well as support the design of effective policies, through the creation of national strategies and high-level coordination platforms.
Under Mexico’s leadership, and as noted in the G20 Leaders Summit Declaration, the G20 also highlighted the importance of the AFI network’s Maya Declaration and encouraged other nations to make financial inclusion commitments, spotlighting the successful peer learning platform at the core of the AFI network.
