Executive Director: Cancellation of 13 events and alternative mode of delivery

World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) a global emergency, which has affected about 70 countries so far. These developments have impelled AFI Management Unit to cancel all events scheduled between 9 March 2020 and 22 May 2020 to ensure health and safety of our members and staff. The cancellation of AFI events (please see attached schedule) follows an internal risk assessment.

In making this decision, AFI Management Unit has considered the travel profile of our members and our staff, travel routes taken to reach each event, as well as countries where events are taking place, their travel advice and potential restrictions which evolve daily.

This is an interim measure intended to safeguard our members and staff against the potential inconvenience during travel and impact of contracting the virus.

The cancellations are very disappointing for us given the attention we have been giving to our events. But we are aware that these are not normal times.

To ensure business continuity, AFI Management Unit will communicate alternative modalities. We will be leveraging on telecommunications technology to ensure we attain our objectives in the most timely and efficient manner. AFI Policy Managers will be in contact with their respective counterparts with clear plans on how to proceed with the delivery of AFI’s policy work.

We apologize to all our members for the inconvenience caused by cancellations, particularly to our co-hosts: Bank of Ghana, Reserve Bank of Vanuatu, Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador, Central Bank of Suriname and Central Bank of Eswatini.

AFI will keep all members, partners and donors informed about further developments and how we will advance our work in the interim.

Sincerely,

Alfred Hannig
AFI Executive Director
