Raúl Hernández-Coss unexpectedly passes away in Colombia

An AFI Champion in every sense of the word”

It is with the deepest sadness that we experienced the death of our friend and colleague Raúl Hernández-Coss. His passing has been a terrible and unexpected loss.

Raúl was an AFI Champion in every sense of the word. He was a driving force behind the concept of our network and quickly became an instrumental part in bringing smart financial inclusion policy issues from emerging and developing nations into the world’s spotlight. Raúl was particularly focused on highlighting the effectiveness of the peer to peer learning model and his efforts were rewarded in 2012 when, at the G20 Leaders Summit, the peer to peer learning method was noted as one of the most important tools for sharing knowledge and developing more effective policy.

Not content to focus just on advocacy, Raúl was an active participant in many areas of AFI’s work. He served as Policy Champion, Working Group Chair, author and co-author of many AFI publications and made appearances in several short films on financial inclusion. His most recent work had been focused on Data and Measurement through which he believed the true impact of financial inclusion policy on the lives of the world’s poor could be revealed. His efforts on data were recognized in 2012, when the issue was elevated to the G20.

Raúl will be remembered for his passion, his good humor, his dedication to the work of AFI, as well as for his contribution to moving the global financial inclusion agenda forward. His presence will be greatly missed across the network.
